Elgin detectives are still actively searching for a Kane County inmate who escaped as of Friday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Adam Schuessler said police continue to pursue leads to locate Hugo R. Avila, who escaped from a vehicle while he was transported to the county jail.

Avila, 21, was being transferred from the Elgin Police Department to the Kane County Sheriff’s jail when he slipped his handcuffs and fled the transport van while the officer was stopped in traffic near Randall Road and Route 64 around 1:05 p.m. Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, St. Charles city officials said they had credible information to believe Avila left the immediate St. Charles area.

Schuessler said the police department will conduct a review on the circumstances of his escape and what occurred.

Avila was charged Monday with aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, speeding 21 miles per hour over the speed limit, not having a valid driver’s license and possessing drug paraphernalia, Kane County court records show.

Avila is described as having black hair and brown eyes, approximately 5’8?, 125 pounds and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and bluejeans.

If anyone sees Avila, police ask them to call 911 and do not make contact with him.
