Evanston fire investigators are trying to determine exactly what started a Tuesday afternoon fire inside a popular Central Street restaurant.

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Evanston Fire Department responded to reports of a kitchen fire at Old Neighborhood Grill in the 2900 block of Central Street, according to a news release. A fire behind a stove could not be contained by those at the restaurant, according to the release.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire within the kitchen and the fire was upgraded, bringing in neighboring fire departments to assist with the response and to provide Evanston coverage.

Firefighters contained the fire to one room and successfully extinguished it within 15 minutes, according to the release.

There were no reports of civilian or firefighter injuries. A portion of Central Street was briefly closed to allow for the staging of fire vehicles but was later reopened.

A representative for Neighborhood Grill could not immediately be reached for comment.
