Free vaccine clinic at Edison Jr./Sr. High School in Lake Station
A free COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be held from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at Lake Station Edison Junior-Senior High School, 3304 Parkside Ave. No appointment is necessary. Participants can choose the two-dose Pfizer vaccine or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Only the Pfizer vaccine is available to children ages 12 to 17. Access to the walk-in clinic will be on the west side of the school’s parking lot at Door H.
Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Save the Dunes
In celebration of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Sept. 25, Save the Dunes invites residents from throughout the region to join in the 2021 Dunes Dash to support the Indiana Dunes. The virtual 5K run/walk will talkie place from Sept. 18 to 25 with registered participants completing 3.10 miles at the place and pace of their choice. Registered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt available for pick up prior to the event or available by mail following NPLD. T-shirts are only guaranteed to those who register on or before Tuesday. All funds raised will be used to support Save the Dunes’ programmatic work to enhance and protect the Indiana Dunes National Park. Register at savedunes.org/dash2021.
15th annual remote-controlled air show
An indoor remote-controlled air show and static display hosted by the Midwest RC Pilots will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Drive. Run ‘America’s Race’ at National Park’s West Beach
The National Park Service is partnering with Leon’s Triathlon and Team Rubicon Disaster Response to present the inaugural “America’s Race” on Sept. 11 at Indiana Dunes National Park’s West Beach. This event is part of a national recognition of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and honors our military veterans and first-responders. The 5K and 10K championship features obstacles representing numerous American conflicts. Race participants will fight their way through the forests of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Crawl through the trenches of WWI. Negotiate the obstacles at Normandy Beach. Go on patrol in Vietnam. Run up sand dunes in the Middle East and climb the stairs of the Twin Towers. Military Veterans and First Responders will get the first chance to sign-up. Registration will then be open to the general public and capped at 250 contestants.
