Using camouflage netting for hunting

When hunting certain kinds of prey, a hunter will be sitting silently for long periods of time. But if the hunter cannot remain concealed, the time spent waiting will be a waste.

Prey animals will rarely approach the hunter’s position if they can see the hunter. The best camouflage netting can cover up a single hunter’s position, or it can hide an entire campsite. Below you’ll find the information hunters need to know to choose the right camouflage nets.

Camouflage net sizes

Although it can be tempting to try to save some money by going with a smaller-sized net, this is not the best idea. If you travel to the hunting area and find out that the net is too small when you arrive, it will leave you exposed.

A typical camouflage net with about 100 square feet of coverage will cost $20-$35. Nets with 3D features and a complex weave pattern will cost $35-$50 for about 100 square feet.

Take measurements of the hunting area and make sure you purchase more than enough netting to cover the area. If you end up with too much net, you always can cut it to a smaller size as desired after it arrives. The largest nets offer 300-plus square feet of coverage, while small nets may have 25 square feet of coverage or less.

One potential downside to purchasing netting that is too large is that it will be heavier than a smaller net. If you must hike to a remote location to hunt, carrying a net that’s bigger than it needs to be will weigh you down.

Camouflage net designs

Camouflage netting is available in different color patterns to match the area in which the hunter will be working. Some of the options include:

Desert: Features tans and browns that should resemble brush and sand.

Wetland: The wetland net design will have greens, browns, and tans, often simulating dry grasses and reeds in the marsh.

Winter: These will have whites, blacks, and browns, helping the hunter blend in with snow cover.

Woodland: A woodland net should resemble the colors in a forested area with greens, browns and blacks.

Other camouflage net features

Here are some of the other features to consider to help hunters select the best camouflage hunting netting for their needs.

Noise: It’s important for camouflage netting to consist of materials that do not crinkle or make other noises when they move in the wind. A quiet hunting area gives you a better chance at success.

Tear resistance: With tree branches and other items that could puncture the material all around the hunter, any camouflage netting needs to have a durable design that can resist tears.

UV resistance: For netting hanging outdoors and exposed to sunlight, having UV protection built into the material will help it last longer. However, those who will be taking the netting down and placing it in storage after each hunting session probably don’t need the extra cost for sun protection for the material.

Waterproofing: Camouflage netting will suffer exposure to rough weather and damp conditions. Because of the natural gaps in the mesh of some models of netting, it cannot completely block rainwater, though. If you want to protect the items underneath the netting from rainwater, you may have to add a waterproof tarp under the camouflage netting.
