Kane County health officials said they anticipate providing Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster shots at its VaxHub in Batavia soon.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Pfizer boosters for a broader group of people on Friday morning. People ages 18 to 64 who are at an increased risk of COVID-19 because of their workplace or institutional settings, older adults, long-term care facility residents and some people with underlying health conditions are recommended for the booster.
The Kane County Health Department said it is awaiting more guidance and criteria from the Illinois Department of Public Health before administering booster shots.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose of the vaccine, including people who have received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress their immune system, who are receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood, received a stem cell transplant within the last two years, have moderate to severe primary immunodeficiency, have advanced or untreated HIV infection or active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids.
The health department recommends people talk to their health care provider about their condition and if getting an additional dose of the vaccine is appropriate for them.
More decisions are to come on whether to allow booster doses of vaccines made by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.
The county’s VaxHub site at 501 N. Randall Road in Batavia is open Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. People can schedule an appointment online at www.kanevax.org or walk-in.
