A fire Wednesday at a Grayslake apartment building left seven units uninhabitable and drew firefighters from 13 area departments, authorities said.

The fire broke out at around 5:48 p.m. at a 12-unit building in the 100 block of Glen Street, according to the Grayslake Area Fire Protection District. The blaze originated in a top floor apartment in the three-story building, firefighters said.

An officer on scene evacuated residents. Grayslake firefighters said heavy smoke was coming from the building as they arrived and they activated a second alarm. Area departments responded to both fight the fire and provide coverage at local fire stations.

Paramedics treated and released an occupant of the apartment where the fire started. Authorities reported no other injuries.

Firefighters put out the blaze just past 6:30 p.m. Smoke and water damage made seven units uninhabitable, authorities said. The Red Cross helped make arrangements for impacted occupants, the fire department said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
