Registration open for South Shore Arts classes

Registration is now open for the winter session of classes at South Shore Arts. In-person visual arts classes will be held at at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster. Class offerings include a variety of senior, adult, and youth art classes, such as multi-level ceramics, figure drawing, Japanese Manga illustration for teens and printmaking. This winter artists of all ages and abilities are invited to partake in three new and in-person visual arts mini-sessions. Workshops will include a Valentine’s Day print and card-making night for adults and couples, a surrealist still-life drawing studio for teens and a three-part mini-session for kids who want to learn how to hand sew their own plushies. All in-person weekly classes and mini-sessions are facilitated with an abundance of COVID-19 safety precautions for youth, adults and seniors. Franciscan Health to host blood drives

Franciscan Health hospitals will host three upcoming blood drives: from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Suite C and D at the Marion Education Center at Franciscan Health Crown Point, 1201 S. Main St.; and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 21 and from 2 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Franciscan Health Michigan City, 3500 Franciscan Way. Appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled at versiti.org/IL or by calling 1-800-786-4483. Walk-ins are welcome as the schedule and social distancing allow. A blood drive also will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 22 in Conference Room B at Chesterton Health and Emergency Center, 770 Indian Boundary Road. Call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter Franciscan to schedule an appointment. Donors should also eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. Donors must bring photo identification and masks are required.

Holiday storyteller to visit Barker Mansion

Join storyteller Jack Olesker as he shares holiday tales from Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Barker Mansion Drawing Room, 631 Washington St., Michigan City. Guests can make a holiday craft and refreshments will be served in the newly renovated Thomas P. McCormick Room. Those attending are asked to bring a book donation for the Sandcastle Shelter. The Barker Mansion is now open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT Tuesday through Sunday. Holiday admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and veterans. Art in Focus series to continue virtually

The South Shore Arts Art in Focus lecture series will continue with a virtual discussion about the history of the Christmas Cookie and holiday baking at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday. Director of Education Natalie Heath will be joined by author and food and entertainment columnist for The Post-Tribune, Phil Potempa. They will discuss the history of various creative holiday baking traditions, while featuring a few family recipes of their own. The program is free and open to the public.
