Duneland Weavers Guild program and meeting
The Duneland Weavers Guild will meet from 10 a.m. to Noon on Jan. 8 at Three Moons Fiberworks, 402 Broadway, Chesterton. Meetings are open to the public. Following the meeting, there will be a “Hands-on Program” presented by Sherron Pampalone who will demonstrate how to weave on a circular cardboard loom. Participants are asked to bring the following: cardboard cutting scissors; a small piece of cardboard; tape, a ruler and a pencil; varying textures of yarn bits to weave with; and a thick cotton for warp such as Sugar and Cream, 5/2 or 3/2. PNW hosts 27th to host annual MLK Day event in virtual format
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites the community to join in a celebration of diversity, inclusion and Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in the university’s annual program from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 17. The free, virtual event can be viewed at PNW’s YouTube channel during or after this time. The program’s theme is “Social Justice Begins with Me,” which focuses on inward reflection for a commitment to bettering humanity, in turn extending that mission to the larger community. The program lineup includes: keynote speaker Nicky Ali Jackson, PNW associate professor of Criminal Justice; emcee of the celebration Dion Campbell, chief of police for the Michigan City Police Department; and opening remarks by PNW Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Kenneth C. Free classes help adults earn their high school diplomas
Merrillville Adult Education (MAE) offers a free program to help adults obtain their high school equivalency credentials. Located in Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place, MAE’s preparation classes are designed to take students from their current knowledge to a point where passing the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) the first time is a reasonable goal. Instruction is available Mondays through Thursdays. Preparation classes are not required prior to taking the HiSET. Upcoming 2021 HiSET test dates include: Jan. 25 and 26, registration deadline Jan. 20; Feb. 8 and 9, registration deadline Feb. 3; Feb. 22 and 23, registration deadline Feb. 17; March 8 and 9, registration deadline March 3; March 22 and 23, registration deadline March 17; April 5 and 6, registration deadline April 4; April 19 and 20, registration deadline April 14; May 3 and 4, registration deadline April 28; May 17 and 18, registration deadline May 12; May 31 and June 1, registration deadline May 26. Lake County Public Library seeks community input
As a part of their strategic plan, the Lake County Public Library mailed out postcards to every address in the in the library’s district asking residents to complete a survey explaining what they would like the library’s role to be in the community. Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey, no library card is necessary. Participants will be entered to win a $100 gas gift card, donated by the Friends of Lake County Public Library. The survey can be found on the library’s website or at www.lcplin.org/take-survey. The deadline to be entered into the raffle is Friday.
