South Elgin library closing early due to staff shortages

The Gail Borden Public Library branch in South Elgin will close early through Wednesday this week because of staff shortages.

Instead of closing at 7 p.m., the facility will end the day at 4 p.m., library officials said. It’s hoped normal 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. hours will resume Thursday, Jan. 13, library spokeswoman Denise Raleigh said.

The main library in downtown Elgin and its two branches in Elgin and South Elgin have been seeing the same staffing problems as other businesses because of the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, Raleigh said.

They’re taking a number of precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of patrons and staff, she said.

Plexiglass barriers were installed last year, the HVAC systems upgraded to use MERV 14 filters to capture particles and the staff provided with N95 face masks, Raleigh said. Social distancing and mask-usage is mandatory for staff and patrons.

Pandemic team work extended; clinic set for Saturday

A $100,000 grant awarded to the Elgin Area Pandemic Team by the Illinois Public Health Association will allow the group to continue its work through June.

That work includes a COVID-19 vaccine booster clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

The team is overseen by the Gail Borden Public Library District Foundation and Library District in partnership with Centro de Informacion. Team health workers help the public access vaccination and booster shot events and offer education on COVID-19 developments.

The team is available from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays at the downtown Elgin library, 270 N. Grove St.
