Although most spots in the Chicago area did not see additional snow Thursday morning, the roughly 5 to 10 inches of snow that fell Wednesday affected the morning commute with crashes and slow-moving traffic.
Roughly a dozen vehicles were involved in accidents, causing several delays and closed roads, according to the Total Traffic and Weather Network. Among them was an accident in Manhattan on U.S. 52 on both eastbound and westbound lanes on Wilton Road and South Cedar Road.
In Wilmington, roads were closed on Wilmington Road and Peotone Road on both eastbound and westbound lanes between Indian Trail Road and Old Chicago Road due to an accident.
Peotone saw dangerous driving conditions with blowing and drifting snow.
And in the Southbound lane of I-57 near 134th street, a crash resulted in a downed light pole across two right lanes.
In Chicago, salt spreaders began working on Tuesday evening to make sure roads were passible for public transportation, according to the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation. The department manages more than 9,400 lane miles of roadway and more than 300 snow vehicles are efforting to clear snow from residential streets.
With measures in place, the department still warned motorists to allow extra driving time and to use caution.
