The Aurora City Council has approved a new three-year lease with the Riverfront Playhouse downtown.
The lease approved Tuesday night would keep the playhouse in its location in what the city calls the Vargas Building, 13 S. Water St., for at least three years, with one-year options after that. The non-profit community theater has been in that location for more than 40 years.
The playhouse will pay $400 a month in rent, which is what it has been paying since 2017. It also pays for heat, water and lights.
The lease also clarifies maintenance responsibilities between the parties, and sets forth a process for the Riverfront Playhouse to contact city staff for maintenance concerns or emergency issues.
Additionally, the lease specifies when and how the city may enter the premises and what notice is required. The lease contains what the city considers standard provisions for all its leases, including the three-year term.
The city owns all the buildings in the block bordered by the Fox River, Galena Boulevard, Broadway and Downer Place.
Right now, the Riverfront Playhouse is presenting the comedy “Upfronts and Personal” by Ken Levine, which opened March 18. It plays at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through April 23.
Levine himself will be in attendance at the April 1 and 2 shows.
