OLCHS’ Abdelrahman named National Merit finalist
Oak Lawn Community High School senior Yusra Abdelrahman has been named a National Merit Scholar finalist.
The nationwide pool of finalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
Abdelrahman’s Calculus teacher, Lisa Sampson, called her a self-motivated independent learner who has the ability to understand abstract concepts in simple terms.
“She asks questions that are always one step ahead of the material, showing an innate ability to predict connections to future topics,” Sampson said. “She is committed to excellence and thrives when being challenged.”
Southland College Prep’s speech team takes 2nd in state
The Southland College Prep Group Interpretation team placed second in the IHSA’s Drama/Group Interpretation state finals competition at Oak Lawn on March 25-26.
De’ja Mattison, Myka Moore, Nina Washington, Kaiden Rice, Dajia Alford and Makierah Stuckey all received All-Cast recognition. Christian Boyd, Anthony House, Jr., Asiah Lee and Kylee Grant also helped the team to its strong finish.
Also taking the stage with Cheryl Frazier, Southland’s award-winning director of forensics and theatre, were the six Southland team student directors, including Jayla Martin, Naomi Dagba, Ashley Cooper, Diamond Hutton, Jacob Smith and Nehemiah James.
