A Gary man who admitted slashing at a man with a machete at a Hobart gas station would likely get probation, according to court records.
Travis D. Williams, 32, signed a plea agreement April 6 admitting to battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony.
If a judge accepts, the deal with prosecutors calls for his 2.5-year jail sentence to be suspended and served on probation.
His sentencing hearing before Judge Samuel Cappas is set for May 10.
Police were called just before 8 p.m. April 8, 2021, to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where the victim told police Williams had stabbed him after they got into a confrontation outside a Family Express gas station.
The victim saw Williams yelling at a woman, who he assumed was a girlfriend, and “didn’t like” how he was treating her, charges state.
Williams told him he worked there and to “mind his business,” according to court documents. He then went into his car, grabbed a knife that “resembled a machete” and swung at the victim. He was cut in the right thumb with a 3-4 inch cut on his right shoulder near his neck, charges state.
A friend, who was with him, drove him to the hospital for treatment. The victim needed 50 stitches and 30 staples, documents state.
