An Antioch-area man was reported to be in critical condition Friday after falling into a channel while fishing on Fox Lake, authorities said.

The man, 73, was fishing with a friend around 1:35 p.m. in a lake channel in the 38500 block of North Lakeside Place near Antioch when his line became tangled in weeds, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.

Preliminary reports indicate that the man fell into the water from a boat as he tried to untangle the line, police said.

The man went under the water, and his friend, a 74-year-old Winthrop Harbor man, jumped in and attempted to keep his friend above water, police said.

The victim fell unconscious, police said. Firefighters arrived and rescued both men from the water.

The victim was taken to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital in critical condition, police said.
