A Montgomery man was charged with attempted murder after he was accused of trying to help someone commit suicide, police officials said Tuesday.

The 71-year-old also faces charges of attempted domestic battery, aggravated battery to a victim 60 years or older, aggravated battery/use of a deadly weapon and providing assistance in an attempted suicide, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Police were called to his home on Sunday, May 1 on the 0 to 100 block of First Avenue and found a 65-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries. The woman was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive her injuries.

Police found the man at the house on he village’s East Side, and he was also taken to a local hospital with minor self-inflicted injuries.

After reviewing the incident, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges on May 5.

According to charging documents, the man allegedly “assisted the victim in the attempted suicide after she begged him to help in her suicide.”

He was released from the hospital Tuesday and was taken into custody. He could not be reached for comment, and messages left at his home were not returned. He is due in court Wednesday morning for a bond hearing, according to Kane County jail records.
