Officials said there was no health hazard to the public after a tank of ammonia began leaking Friday outside the Aurora Water Treatment Plant.

Firefighters responded around 9:15 a.m. to the plant, 1111 Aurora Ave., after a high-pressure leak on a 1,000-gallon tank containing ammonia began, officials said in a news release.

A manager for the water plant said employees were working on the tank when the leak occurred. Firefighters sprayed water over the tank to dissipate the vapor until the leak was stopped.

A hazardous materials team turned a valve on the top of the tank to stop the leak, officials said. Around 170 gallons of ammonia were released.

Aurora Fire Department officials said the incident lasted 45 minutes and the leak did not cause any health hazard to the public.
