A vehicle crashed into a utility pole in downtown Aurora Sunday night, causing power outages in the surrounding area, according to the Aurora Police Department.

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. Sunday near West Benton Street and South Lake Street, when a vehicle struck a utility pole, per the police department.

That prompted Lake Street and River Street to be shut down in all directions while emergency crews worked to clear the scene, the police department said on Facebook. As of Sunday night, the department was asking the public to seek alternative routes and avoid the area until the roadways were clear.

The crash also caused power outages affecting multiple blocks in the surrounding area, the department said in the message on Facebook.

As of early Monday afternoon, utility work was still being done near Lake and Benton. A police department spokesman said that ComEd’s night shift responded to the area, and that ComEd was completing its work as of Monday afternoon. Xfinity was still doing work as of that time, the spokesman said.

As of Monday afternoon, Lake remained closed from Downer to Cross, and Benton from River to Woodlawn, the department spokesman said.
