An Island Lake police officer was dragged almost a half-mile with his arm stuck in the car window of a man who fled during a traffic stop, authorities said.
The incident happened earlier this month, according to Island Lake police, who said the officer was not seriously injured.
On June 11 around 3:48 p.m., the officer stopped a motorist later identified as Lanord Miles, 29, of Schaumburg. The officer said Miles was speeding near the intersection of Eastway and Forest drives.
The officer pulled Miles over and “saw Miles making furtive movements into the center console of the vehicle, grabbing a bag of a white substance and throwing it into the passenger side of the vehicle,” according to police.
The officer, who believed Miles may have been driving under the influence, said he and Miles got into a confrontation as Miles tried to flee. Miles then rolled up the driver’s side window, trapping the officer’s arm inside, police said.
Mile then drove off south on Eastway, police said, with the officer partially trapped. The car proceeded about a half-mile, dragging the officer, and the vehicle hit speeds of 50 mph as Miles drove at mailboxes and oncoming cars in an attempt to shake the officer from the vehicle, police said.
The vehicle slowed down near the intersection of Eastway and Fairfield, at which point the officer extricated his arm and was able to take Miles into custody, police said.
Both the driver and the officer were transported to Good Shepherd hospital, evaluated and then released.
Miles was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two felony drug counts, driving under the influence and speeding.
According to court records, Miles has posted bond and is due back in court in July 6.
