The Park Ridge July Fourth kiddie parade, which started bright and early at 9 a.m. Monday in and around Hodges Park, brought out children in patriotic colors and families with festively decorated bicycles and strollers.
The kiddie parade is sponsored by Park Ridge’s “Noon” Kiwanis Club.
Many of the kids expressed the fun and excitement of the holiday, and smiles abounded during the parade —before a mass shooting at the Highland Park parade turned the day into a tragic one for much of the Chicago area and beyond.

The neighboring village of Niles started its parade at 8:45 a.m., which allowed floats and marchers to reach the ending point of Grennan Heights Park before news broke of the Highland Park tragedy.
Morton Grove, however, canceled its 2:30 p.m. parade, as well as the remainder of its Morton Grove Days festival and its evening fireworks. Skokie canceled its noon parade and its evening fireworks at Niles West High School. Glenview likewise canceled its fireworks.
