An Aurora man is in critical condition after trying to extinguish a grease fire inside an apartment in the city Monday afternoon, officials said.

Aurora firefighters were called to a three-story apartment building on the 4000 block of Chesapeake Drive around noon for a reported fire. When they arrived they discovered the fire was out but a resident was severely burned, Aurora Fire Department officials said in a news release.

The 37-year-old man was taken to a Level 1 Trauma and Burn Center in critical condition, officials said.

The fire started when a pan containing grease caught fire in the kitchen, according to officials.
