A daycare for dogs on Aurora’s far West Side is looking to add outdoor dog runs and pens.

Hounds Town USA needs a plan revision for its building in the West Aurora Plaza – the former McDonald’s restaurant – to build the outdoor facilities.

The building is one of four on what is called Lot 6 of West Aurora Plaza, and stands at 2011 W. Galena Blvd.

For the Hounds Town building, there currently are 59 parking spaces. Hounds Town would have to eliminate some of those spaces to build a 2,000-square-foot dog run, and an outdoor pen. The pen also would be built over the existing drive-thru and adjacent drive aisle that are holdovers from the building’s days as a restaurant.

When finished, the building would have 45 parking spaces.

Hounds Town takes care of animals during the day, and also boards them at night. It has between 30 to 40 animals a day, and boards about 15 a night. While the animals are predominantly dogs, they do board cats, too.

The company has been remodeling the building’s interior for boarding and grooming services since early 2021.

The building was home to McDonald’s for years, until the restaurant built a new building in the West Aurora Plaza closer to Galena Boulevard.

Hounds Town is open to the public usually between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The animals typically are taken outside between 9 a.m. and dusk.

Aldermen at this week’s Committee of the Whole meeting put the plan revision on next week’s regular City Council meeting on the consent agenda, meaning it is likely to pass.
