I will happily agree to support Joe of Alsip in his recommendation that the death penalty be restored if he can guarantee and prove that no mistake will ever be made in its application; that no innocent person will ever be executed. Has he forgotten so soon that former Gov. George Ryan commuted the death sentence that had been imposed on an innocent man less than 48 hours before he was due to be electrocuted? Once a human being has been put to death, there’s no going back. How do you remedy that kind of mistake?

George, South Side

Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Donald J. Trump have two things in common. They all took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America and all of them broke that oath. If you defend Trump and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, add your name to the list of traitors.

Greg, Lockport

Mary from Tinley Park, our Constitution certainly would protect the majority of its citizens if it were being followed. It does not need to be amended, it needs to be reread and not rewritten. If the politicians had the nerve to follow the Constitution, the amendments and the Bill of Rights, the police wouldn’t be stripped of their powers and the courts would be much more concerned with the rights of the citizens instead of the criminals

Maddie, Orland Park

Just think, if R. Kelly had gone to Epstein island he would be a free man today.

Jim, South Holland

Marie from Orland Park is just another disgruntled citizen throwing the blame for Chicago’s current social ills on current government officials. No doubt, part of their job is to try and improve conditions. Regardless the political party, the solution won’t be found until more citizens of Chicago and surrounding suburbs care enough and have enough self respect to offer some real help. Whining about it isn’t part of the remedy. Get involved enough and vote for change.

MJ, Worth

You want things to go wrong? Let white Christians take charge. Crusades, inquisitions, witch trials, Prohibition, lynching, segregation, voter suppression. The list is absolutely endless. Christopher Hitchens was absolutely right when he said religion poisoned everything.
