Spots still open in Minecraft-inspired camp for kids
Openings remain for Snapology’s Epic Mining & Crafting camp, which is being held from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 18-22, at The Ed Schock Centre of Elgin.
The camp is designed for children ages 7 through 12, who will participate in activities inspired by the videogame Minecraft.
Cost is $150 for Elgin residents, $175 for nonresidents. Campers bring their own water and snacks.

East Dundee holding downtown cruise night Monday
East Dundee will be hosting a free cruise night from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 18, on North River Street in the village’s downtown district.
The family-friendly event is open to all makes and models of cars, which can be displayed for free. Anyone wanting include their car in the event should enter North River Street from a main gate entrance off Barrington Avenue.
Food and beverages will be available from Duke’s Blues N BBQ, Mockingbird Bar + Garden and DC Cobbs.

Free concert being held Tuesday in Elgin’s Wing Park
A free outdoor concert featuring the band Brass From The Past will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Wing Park Bandshell in Elgin.
The ban specializes in horn-heavy hits from the ’60s to now, including songs from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Chicago, Prince, James Brown, Bruno Mars, Chaka Khan and Tower of Power.

‘The Wizard of Oz’ to be shown Friday in Festival Park
The Elgin Parks and Recreation Department show the classic movie, “The Wizard of Oz,” at 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 22 in Festival Park in downtown Elgin.
Food and beverages will be available from the Que Pasta and Joe + Doe trucks before and during the screening. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, bug spray and snacks. Coolers are permitted but alcohol is not.
The movie ties in with the Gail Borden Public Library exhibit in Elgin that explores both the movie and the book.

South Elgin holding events this week in Panton Mill Park
South Elgin will be hosting free special events this coming week in Panton Mill Park at 100 N. Water St.
A cruise night is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, in the park’s parking lot at 100 N. Water St. No registration is required to attend or to display a vehicle. Food will be available from the Brothers BBQ truck.
From 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, Gen Fuze will play covers of classic rock songs and current hits. Food will be available from the Danny’s on Douglas truck.
At dusk Friday, July 22, the animated feature “The Mitchells vs the Machines” will be shown. Concessions will be available starting at 6:30 p.m.

Elgin Recycling leases space in West Dundee industrial park
Elgin Recycling has signed a contact to lease a 63,800-square-foot industrial site at 1101 Wesemann Drive in West Dundee’s Oakview Corporate Park.
According to Timothy Scott, West Dundee’s director of economic development, planning, zoning and urban design, the location was overbuilt in 2021 by developer Opus for its client, Great Lakes Technologies/Wen Power Tools, to accommodate growth and/or other tenants.
The addition of Elgin Recycling essentially fills out the 180,623-square-foot building, Scott said.
Elgin Recycling was seeking a location near its 46 East End Drive headquarters in Gilberts with strategic transportation access, he said.
The company will use the West Dundee facility to take apart and recycle computer equipment.
U-46, D300, D310 to receive $50,000 maintenance grants
Elgin-based School District U-46, Community Unity School District 300 and Burlington Central Community Unit School District 301 will each receive a $50,000 grant for infrastructure work from the Illinois Department of Education.
A total of $30 million in school maintenance grants is being distributed to districts across the state. To be eligible for the money, applicants were required to match the state funds and commit to completing proposed projects within two years.
Projects for which these grants can be used include updates to heating and cooling systems, improvements to ventilation systems and increased accessibility in school buildings.
