Grant money going to Elgin, South Elgin, West Dundee
More than $1 million in grant money is being awarded for open space projects in Elgin, South Elgin and West Dundee through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
A $338,100 state grant is earmarked for improvements to Elgin’s Millennium Park, the Kane County Forest Preserve District will be receiving $400,000 for work to be done at Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin and West Dundee will get $400,000 for Fairhills Park, a news release said.
The funding comes through the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development program, which is administered by the IDNR. When combined with local matching funds, the latest round of open space grants provide more than $56 million to park development projects and land acquisitions in Illinois.
Illinois Medal of Honor Highway caravan event on Sunday
State Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, who helped pass legislation designating U.S. 20 through Elgin and across Illinois as the Illinois Medal of Honor Highway, will participate in a highway caravan making a stop at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Illinois Secretary of State Driver’s License Facility in Elgin.
The honorary name for the 234-mile stretch of U.S. 20 recognizes the service and sacrifices made by Illinois Medal of Honor winners, more than 300 of which lived or were born or buried in Illinois, a news release said.
The caravan starts in East Dubuque at 9:30 a.m. Monday and will make numerous public stops featuring color guard presentations along the way. It’s being coordinated by the Illinois American Legion.
Elgin’s driver’s license facility is located at 595 State St.
Hanover Township’s annual ‘Got Art?’ show opens Aug. 1
Hanover Township’s 16th annual “Got Art?” show will be on display through the month of August, with an opening reception set for 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.
Hundreds of artworks created by adults age 55 and older will be on display. Light refreshments and hors d’ oeuvres will be served at the reception.

Kane-DuPage selling game fish to stock local ponds
The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting orders for game fish that can be used to stock local ponds.
Among the types of fish available for purchase are channel catfish, largemouth bass, triploid grass carp, hybrid bluegill, redear sunfish, golden shiner, fathead minnows and bluegill.
The deadline to order is Sept. 19. Purchases will be picked up Oct. 15 at the Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District office in St. Charles.

‘The Tempest’ being presented Geneva park production
Geneva’s Shakespeare in the Park event returns to Island Park Saturday, July 30, with a production of “The Tempest.”
The free performance starts at 6 p.m. The show is suitable for all ages, officials said.
Now in its 16th year, Shakespeare in the Park is presented by the city of Geneva’s Cultural Arts Commission. Seating begins at 4 p.m. at Island Park, located at State Street/Route 38 and Route 25 in Geneva.
The audience is encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnics. Sandwiches, water, soft drinks and ice cream will be available for purchase, organizers said.

Kane to hold virtual meeting on Randall/Hopps road work
The Kane County Division of Transportation will hold a public information meeting on road improvements planned for Randall Road at Hopps Road at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, via Zoom.
An engineering study is to be done for section of Randall from Gyorr Avenue in South Elgin to the Walmart entrance in Elgin. Improvement plans will be presented at the meeting and the public will be allowed to ask questions and offer comments.
Feedback can also be submitted in writing through Aug. 16.

Hanover seeking mental health program fund applicants
The Hanover Township Mental Health Board is accepting funding applications for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
The Mental Health Board provides about $1 million annually to agencies serving township residents in the areas of mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse intervention and prevention. Currently the board provides funding to 30 agencies that provide 43 programs to residents.
The fiscal year runs from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. Completed applications are due by Sept 16. Agencies receiving funding will be notified in January 2023.
