Registration for Dash for the Dunes open

The Indiana Dunes annual Dunes Dash is set to raise funds to support Save the Dunes mission to advocate for the health and vitality of Northwest Indiana’s local environment and community. The 5k run/walk and 2k kids fun run will be on the streets and trails of Ogden Dunes Nov. 5. Race registration is currently open, and those interested in participating should register at savedunes.org. Participants who would like a t-shirt must register by Oct. 20.

Portage Parks to have annual Haunted Hayride this week

The Portage Parks Department will have its annual Haunted Hayride from 6:30 p..m to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 20, Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 at Woodland Park. Participants can ride a wagon along a trail through the park, though the ride is not recommended for children ages 3 and under. The cost is $4 per person. Concessions will be available for cash purchase only, and a food truck court will open at 6 p.m.

Halloween on Campus at Valparaiso University

Local businesses are set to join Valparaiso University faculty and staff in a Halloween on Campus event, complete with trick-or-treating and a movie night. Trick-or-treat will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at Harre Union, with a movie night to follow at dusk on Oct. 28. Attendees will be able to see “Hocus Pocus 2? on the Harre Union West Lawn, with activities pre-showing at 5 p.m.

Leaf pick-up to begin in Valparaiso next week

Residents in the City of Valparaiso are able to have their leaves picked up beginning next Monday. From Oct. 24 to Dec 2, residents can rake their leaves to the right-of-way “curb,” not onto the street, while the city’s four leaf collection zones are rotated for pick up. The City will not pick up any loose leaf piles with any sort of debris, such as rocks, sticks or garbage, in them. The leaf piles should be kept away from obstacles such as parked cars or mailboxes.
