A 7-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound after the people in her car exchanged gunfire with another vehicle Monday night in Waukegan, police said.

The child is expected to survive, according to authorities.

Investigators said they believe that Mark Ramirez, 25, of Waukegan, was driving a white SUV on Washington Street near Butrick Street at about 9 p.m. when he traded gunfire with another vehicle.

The girl was one of four passengers in the Ramirez vehicle, included two other juveniles and a 24-year-old Waukegan woman.

Police learned that there was a child with a gunshot wound at a hospital emergency room, and they arrested Ramirez on four weapons counts. He was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail after a hearing Tuesday, police said.

Police recovered a 9 mm handgun from the SUV. Authorities are still seeking the other vehicle, which they said is an older model, light-colored sedan. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Waukegan police Tip-Line at (847) 360-9001.
