An off-duty Chicago police officer fired a gun Wednesday morning on the Northwest Side.

It was not clear what prompted the officer to shoot at about 8:15 a.m. in the 2000 block of North Laramie Avenue and as of Wednesday afternoon police said it was unknown if anybody was shot.

The officer was taken to a hospital for “observation” and has been released, police said.

According to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt, the officer was the only person taken to a hospital.

The officer will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days, police said.

A spokesperson for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said they are in the beginning stages of a use of force investigation, with the help of Chicago police.
