A Chicago man faces charges after allegedly stealing $1,800 in chips at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.
Carlos G. Yepez, 25, was charged Thursday with robbery, a Level 5 felony, and theft, a Level 6 felony. The theft charge, if convicted, carries a possible 1- to 6-year prison sentence.
Indiana Gaming Commission Agents tracked Yepez’s identity from the casino’s blanket security footage and his Illinois ID card, which employees scan for every person that walks inside.
An affidavit alleges Yepez grabbed 18 black $100 dealer chips off a table Sept. 18, then fled. The dealer tried to grab his wrist, but he broke away and went to the parking garage and drove off in a Grey Nissan with a Mexican flag on the hood, charges state.
Investigators determined he was a “registered player” and obtained his name and address off his Illinois identification card on file, the affidavit states. A license plate reader also scanned his car.
He is not yet in custody, with orders to be held at first without bail, court records show.
