An Aurora man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing shots in a crowded Montgomery restaurant and injuring two people in 2019, officials said.

Josua Matias, 25, of the 400 block of Marion Avenue, was found guilty in September by a Kendall County jury on two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm following a two-day trial, officials said in a news release. He was sentenced Friday by Kendall County Judge Robert Pilmer.

On Jan. 6, 2019, Matias was with friends around 10:30 p.m. inside a crowded Rosati’s Pizza at 2083 Orchard Road when an argument began between Matias and another person, according to officials. A fight broke out resulting in around 10 people becoming involved in a brawl inside the restaurant, officials said.

As the fight was breaking up, Matias worked his way out of the group, pulled out a handgun and fired at least seven shots into the crowd, striking two people, according to the release. He hit a man in the leg and a woman in her arm, officials said.

The woman required a tourniquet on the scene due to the amount of bleeding and both victims were taken to a hospital.

Matias left the scene, according to the release. The entire incident was captured on a security video in the business.

Matias was later apprehended in St. Charles by agents of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, officials said.
