A fire early Friday morning July 28 left an Elmhurst house in the 100 block of East Crescent Avenue severely damaged and sent an Elmhurst firefighter to Elmhurst Hospital.

Elmhurst firefighters responding to a call at 1:13 a.m. Friday found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home, according to a city release. Firefighters were informed that all residents had safely evacuated the home.

“Family members were in the home (at the time),” Elmhurst interim Fire Chief Dick Dufort told Pioneer Press Monday. “They got out safely.”

Dufort said one Elmhurst firefighter was injured.

“He was injured, treated and released,” Dufort said. “He’s actually back on duty today.”

Dufort said the alarm call was made by a next-door neighbor. Firefighters extinguished the fire in approximately one hour, but not before the fire burned through the structure’s roof.

“There was heavy fire damage,” Dufort said. “The fire is still under investigation. We did call out the DuPage County task force to investigate it.”

Firefighters from Villa Park, Addison, Lombard, York Center, Oakbrook, Hillside, Franklin Park, Westchester, Northlake, and Oakbrook Terrace assisted Elmhurst in fighting the blaze.
