A 39-year-old man is dead after he was shot Sunday evening in the Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

A witness told police the man was driving a vehicle that came to a stop in the 1700 block of North Lotus Avenue. The witness saw four other men inside the vehicle flee after shots were fired at about 5:36 p.m., police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Mohammed K. al Hijoj, a resident of the Dunning neighborhood.

Al Hijoj sustained several gunshot wounds, police said. He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition, where he died at 6:17 p.m.

Police said they recovered a handgun a few feet away from the vehicle.
