The Aurora City Council this week approved contracts for several road projects entering the last phase of engineering and construction in the city.
Aldermen on Tuesday night approved four final, or third phase, engineering for four projects so they can go ahead to construction in the coming year.
The projects are: resurfacing on two segments of Hankes Road on the far West Side; signal modernization and resurfacing on Indian Trail, from Edgelawn Drive to Highland Avenue; resurfacing along Church and Sheffer roads on the East Side; and resurfacing of Illinois Avenue from Highland Avenue to the Fox River bridge on the West Side.
For the Hankes Road project, aldermen approved a $102,248 contract with V3 Companies Ltd., of Woodridge, for final engineering on resurfacing Hankes from Deerpath Road to Galena Boulevard, and resurfacing along Galena to Orchard Road.
Alderman also appropriated $275,000 in motor fuel tax funds to go toward the city’s share of the construction costs.
The project is estimated to be about $727,000, with federal funding paying 75%, or about $545,436. The city has up to $651,750 in federal funding approved, depending on the eventual cost.
On the Indian Trail project, the city approved a $473,545 final engineering contract with Aurora-based HR Green, Inc. Alderman also approved $1.6 million in REBUILD Illinois bond funds for the project.
The REBUILD Illinois Bond Fund is a grant program from state bonds designed to provide local agencies with funds for transportation improvements. The funds can only be used on bridge and major highway projects that provide an average useful life equal to or greater than 13 years.
The city is in various stages of design and construction for projects throughout the Indian Trail corridor.
The project is 80% federally funded, with a total of $3.8 million in Surface Transportation Program money, and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds having been allocated for construction costs.
The project includes modernizing signals at intersections along Indian Trail between Edgelawn Drive and Highland Avenue. Modernization includes replacement of all aging signal equipment, widening of curbs and improving pedestrian facilities to meet Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, city officials said.
The existing roadway and the eight- to 10-foot-wide bike path will be resurfaced as part of this project.
The estimated total cost of the construction is about $4.44 million, with the city’s portion estimated at about $1.03 million.
Aldermen also approved a $53,808 contract with Thomas Engineering Group, which has three offices including one in Aurora, for the Church and Sheffer roads resurfacing project. The project will resurface Church Road, from south of Indian Trail to Sheffer Road, and Sheffer from Church to Ohio Street.
This project is 75% federally funded, up to a maximum of $444,000. The estimated total cost of the construction is $580,000. The city’s portion would be an estimated $176,500.
The council approved an engineering contract with Chastain & Associates LLC of $100,179 for the Illinois Avenue resurfacing project, and also appropriated $660,000 in motor fuel tax for it.
The project will resurface Illinois Avenue, from Highland Avenue to the Fox River bridge. It will not include the intersection with Route 31, or Lake Street, because the state recently resurfaced it.
Federal funding is at 75% for this project. The estimated total construction cost is about $1 million.
