Three men are dead after a shooting Friday afternoon in unincorporated Griffith, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Shortly before 2 p.m., police were sent to a home in the 600 block of Colfax Street, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a news release. Lake County Sheriff’s police, along with a SWAT unit, Griffith Police and other emergency personnel, blockaded the street to secure the location.

In a news release, police said one of the men was found dead at the scene, and two other men were transported to nearby hospitals where they was pronounced dead. All three sustained gunshot wounds.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office released the names of the men on Saturday afternoon.

Griffith resident Robert Secviar, 63, who resided at the Colfax Street residence, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:25 p.m. His death was labeled a homicide.

Hammond resident Marshall Lawson Jr., 69, was pronounced dead by a Methodist Hospitals Northlake physician at 2:50 p.m., and investigators labeled his death a homicide.

John G. Stefanich, 67, of Highland, was pronounced dead by an ER physician at 3:46 p.m. at Community Hospital. The manner of his death is still pending.

Coroner David J. Pastrick thanked the extra staff who responded and assisted with the identification of the men and notification of their families.

Forensic autopsies are scheduled for Sunday at the Lake County Forensic Science Center in Crown Point.

Martinez said detectives are investigating several factors including whether the incident may have been a murder/suicide.

The investigation is ongoing, he said, adding that there’s no further threat to the surrounding area and community.
