A Gurnee-area man injured several people and damaged six cars as he attempted to flee from police Tuesday afternoon, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Reno J. Giangiorgi, 34, of the 18500 block of West Judy Drive, is facing DUI and fleeing charges as well as multiple traffic infractions after he was arrested after he crashed his car into another vehicle.
Four occupants of the car, including two children, were hospitalized with what police said were not life-threatening injuries. One child remained in hospital Wednesday morning and all are recovering, police said.
The chase began shortly after Giangiorgi struck a vehicle in a gas station in the 36000 block of Grandwood Drive in the Gurnee area at around 5:50 p.m. As he fled the crash, Giangiorgi allegedly struck a second vehicle in the gas station parking lot, police said.
A sheriff’s deputy responded and saw Giangiorgi’s car and attempted to make a traffic stop. Giangiorgi, however, continued fleeing, sideswiping two cars at the Stearns School and Hunt Club roads intersection.
The pursuit continued east and then south on Illinois Route 21. At the intersection with Gages Lake Road, Giangiorgi allegedly ran a red light and T-boned the vehicle carrying the four people, and then struck a northbound vehicle. The driver in that vehicle was injured, police said.
A deputy then used their squad car to halt Giangiorgi’s vehicle. He was taken into custody.
Authorities said additional charges could be filed in the incident, and the prosecutors are seeking to have Giangiorgi detained until trial. According to court records, Giangiorgi was charged in May with DUI by Lindenhurst Police.
