The School Town of Munster Board of Trustees will vote to hire Matthew Hicks as the district’s next superintendent at a special board meeting Monday.
The district announced Wednesday that it had concluded its search for a new Superintendent of Schools, following the departure of Bret Heller at the end of June.
It has extended an offer to Hicks, who most recently served as the superintendent of Northeastern Wayne schools in Richmond, Indiana. He has served in that post since 2020.
“Following a comprehensive and competitive process, the Board is confident Dr. Hicks is the right leader to continue the district’s positive momentum and guide us into the future,” according to a statement on the district’s website.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday to hear public comments on the contract and conduct a formal vote.
Hicks’ base salary will be $215,000 annually, according to the proposed contract on the district’s website. If he receives an “effective” or “highly effective” rating on performance evaluation, he will receive at least the same raise as other administrators.

Previously, Hicks was the principal of Northeastern High School from 2018-2020 and assistant principal of Noblesville West Middle School from 2012-2018, according to his LinkedIn profile.
On May 25, 2018, while Hicks was at Noblesville West, a student shot and injured another student and a teacher. Hicks serves on the Principal Recovery Network, which was created by the National Association of Secondary School Principals so principals who have experienced school shootings can support one another and lobby elected officials to support student mental health resources, according to the Western Wayne News.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, a master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, and an educational doctorate from Ball State University, according to LinkedIn.
