
Cabaret act starring Elgin native to take The Hemmens stage
Cabaret act The Nitz/Howe Experience will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in the theater in the round on the lower level of The Hemmens Cultural Center in downtown Elgin.
Elgin native Daryl Nitz will sing Broadway, pop, jazz, and blues numbers, accompanied by George Howe on piano and joined by other special guests, according to a news release. Nitz’s repertoire features 30 vocal impressions, including Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond and Carol Channing.

Dundee Township offering free electronics waste recycling
Dundee Township is holding a free electronics waste recycling event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, outside its East Dundee building at 611 E. Main St.
Open to township residents, the event will be repeated monthly on the second Saturday of the month, according to a post on the Carpentersville Facebook page.
Seniors and people with limited mobility should call the township supervisor’s office during the week to arrange assistance.

Elgin Symphony Orchestra performing concerts this weekend
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at The Hemmens Cultural Center in downtown Elgin.
Under the direction of Chad Goodman, selections will include Mozart’s Symphony No. 13 and his Horn Concerto No. 4; Schumann’s Three Romances and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4.
Featured musician will be the ESO’s principal horn Greg Flint, who is also a horn professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Tickets are $68, $42 and $20, and $10 for students. Children 17 and younger can attend for free if accompanied by an adult ticketholder.

South Elgin holds ribbon cutting for paddle craft launch
A ribbon-cutting event was held Monday for South Elgin’s new accessible paddle craft launch at SEBA Park, 151 S. Water St., along the Fox River.
The launch is one of five funded with $1 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act money, according to Kane County. Another $200,000 was set aside for marketing the Fabulous Fox! National Water Trail and the launches.
Earthwerks Land Improvement and Development Corp. built launch sites in South Elgin, Batavia, Carpentersville, East Dundee and Montgomery. They provide safe, convenient access to the river for nonmotorized watercraft, a news release said.
“We’re grateful to the Kane County Development Department for investing in outdoor recreation and helping us further our mission to provide inclusive and engaging spaces for all,” South Elgin Village President Steven Ward said.

Big Timber XC Challenge at Camp Big Timber on Sunday
The sixth annual Big Timber Challenge XC will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, at Camp Big Timber, 37W955 Big Timber Road, Elgin.
Activities will include a 3-mile run or walk along a perimeter trail starting at 8 a.m.; a run for children 10 or younger on grass and gravel near the main lodge at 9 a.m.; and a 5-mile run at 9:30 a.m., doing two loops of the perimeter trail, according to the event website.
The trail route includes a creek so runners are encouraged to wear a pair of old shoes and bring a change of clothes for after the race.
Proceeds will benefit Scouting America Three Fires Council and the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin.

Elgin pumpkin smashes being held at three locations
Elgin will be holding free pumpkin smashes from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8, at Advocate Sherman Hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road; Elgin High School, 1200 Maroon Drive; and Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive.
Pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks will be accepted, according to the city’s website. Items should be free of candles, stickers, plastic, yarn, glitter and other decorations. Acrylic paint is acceptable.
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County reminds people not to dump pumpkins or gourds on district property because they introduce nonnative species to the local environment, a district Facebook post. Violations come with a $250 fine.
