A Roseland man is facing charges of killing his 88-year-old mother and hiding her body in the basement of the home they shared, according to Chicago police.
Kevan Works, 66, faces single counts of first-degree murder and concealing a homicidal death, according to a Chicago Police Department news release. A police report obtained by the Tribune indicates that Works reported his mother missing on March 30 and told police at the time that he hadn’t seen her since she left for work three days earlier.
Calumet (5th) District police searched the woman’s bedroom at her home in the 10700 block of South Lafayette Avenue the day Works reported her missing, but found nothing out of the ordinary.
A second report stated that when police returned to the home Tuesday morning to execute a search warrant for the woman, they found her dead and wrapped in “rugs, plastic bags and other items” in the home’s basement.
The identity of Works’ mother wasn’t publicly released as of Thursday. An autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled her death was a homicide from multiple injuries.
Works is set to appear before a judge for a detention hearing on Friday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
