While a toxicology report is pending, police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in a Monday afternoon crash in which a juvenile on an electric scooter was injured in Portage Township.
Police said the juvenile was transported to a hospital via Lutheran Air and do not have an update on the child’s condition.
Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched around 5:18 p.m. to U.S. 6 and McCool Road for an accident involving a vehicle and the juvenile, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, public information officer for the sheriff’s department.
An initial investigation and witness statement showed a 2019 Ford Escape being driven by a woman, 57, was northbound on McCool Road, passing through the intersection with U.S. 6.
The vehicle and the scooter collided on the north side of the intersection, police said, and at the time of the crash, northbound and southbound traffic had a green light.
The Porter County Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the cause and circumstances
surrounding this crash. The investigation is ongoing and a toxicology report is pending, McFalls said, but police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
McFalls thanked the agencies that assisted at the scene and said no further information is available.
