Longtime Chicago White Sox anthem performer Gerald Chaney was hospitalized Wednesday evening after collapsing while singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Rate Field.
Chaney was treated by EMTs on the field and was alert, the White Sox said, after experiencing the medical emergency. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation, the team said.
“The entire White Sox family is sending love to Gerald and his family for a full and speedy recovery,” the Sox said as part of an update on social media.
“I was warming up (in the bullpen) so I kind of just saw what you guys all saw, kind of saw him go down,” Sox starter Sean Burke said after the game. “They said he’s doing well at the hospital now so hopefully he’s going to make a full recovery from that.”
In an update, the Sox said Chaney “is doing well as he continues to recover and undergo evaluation at the hospital.”
“Scary stuff and really just hopeful that he was all right,” Sox manager Will Venable said after the game. “I was really glad to hear that he is doing well, but obviously a scary moment.”
