The Chicago Blackhawks have given general manager Kyle Davidson a multiyear contract extension, Chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz said Wednesday.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Wirtz announced the news in an interview on CHSN before the team’s season finale against the San Jose Sharks at the United Center.

“Kyle’s exceptional body of work to date has set us down the path of bringing sustainable, championship-caliber hockey back to Chicago,” Wirtz said in a statement. “In a short amount of time, he’s rebuilt the team through strong drafting and player development, delivering a league-leading prospect pool and the beginnings of our future core.

“He alongside head coach Jeff Blashill have redefined our locker room’s culture and mentality, and we are seeing improvements in all of the underlying areas that make winning possible. We believe in Kyle’s vision for this team and remain fully committed to his plan to return the Blackhawks to the top of our sport.”

Davidson, 37, concluded his 16th season with the Hawks organization Wednesday. He took over as interim GM after the October 2021 resignation of Stan Bowman, then had the interim tag removed in March 2022.

That’s when a new era started for the Hawks. Most of the figures from their dynasty — they won three Stanley Cups in six years from 2010-15 — moved on, highlighted by the blockbuster trade that sent Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers on Feb. 28, 2023.

Davidson has been a patient figure in the Hawks front office, electing for a draft-heavy route to rebuild the team. He has drafted 11 first-rounders, including Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar and Anton Frondell. Though his player-acquiring trades have yet to move the needle, his pickup of goaltender Spencer Knight in March 2025 has been among the most prominent.

The Hawks have missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons and eight of nine. In Davidson’s five seasons as GM — he took over after six games in 2021-22 — the team hasn’t hit the 30-win mark.

The contract confirms the trust Wirtz has in Davidson. With a potential shot at Ivar Stenberg or Gavin McKenna in the upcoming NHL draft, the rebuilding process continues.

“I am extremely grateful for the support that Danny Wirtz has shown me these last four years,” Davidson said in a statement. “His commitment to our shared vision for the future of the Blackhawks has been vital to the success we’ve seen as we’ve worked to build our roster into a team that can compete for years to come. We still have lots of work to do as we strive to bring the Stanley Cup back to Chicago, and I’m excited to continue building a team that our fans can be proud of.”
