Authorities said two teenage girls attacked Cook County Sheriff’s police officers as they tried to break up a fight in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood late Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff’s police were assisting Chicago police in a response to gunshots when they saw a physical altercation in the 6400 block of South Evans Avenue between multiple people just past 4:40 p.m., according to police.

As sheriff’s police attempted to intervene in the fight, two 15-year-old girls “battered” the officers, authorities said. One Cook County officer sustained bruising to his face and was transported to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition. Another officer was bruised on his left hip but declined medical treatment.

The teens were arrested, authorities said. Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.
