Beidelman Furniture — the oldest business in Naperville and DuPage County — will close its doors in downtown Naperville near the end of the month, according to an announcement posted on Facebook.

“We will miss YOU!!” the message posted Thursday afternoon by the family-owned business said. “Last day of Business will be April 29. Thank you for everything Naperville!!!”

No reason for closure was given, and representatives for the store could not be reached immediately for comment.

If you've ever wondered what downtown Naperville looked like in the 1940s, this postcard provides the answer. It offers a view of Washington Street looking north from Chicago Avenue. Jackson Avenue is at the left between the service station and Beidelman Furniture, the latter being only business there that's still in existence. In fact, the 163-year-old store received landmark status from the city this summer. (Naperville Heritage Society/Naper Settlement)

The store dates back to 1861, when then-cabinetmaker Frederick Long established a furniture business in a wood frame building at the corner of Washington Street and Jackson Avenue. Five decades later, Long’s nephew Oliver J. Beidelman purchased the company.

In 1928, Beidelman replaced Long’s original wooden store with a three-story brick building that was made a city landmark in 2024. Beidelman’s son, Owen, took over the operation in 1966, and it has remained in the family for duration of its run.

“For 165 years, Beidelman Furniture has been more than a storefront — it’s been part of the story of downtown Naperville and the lives of generations in our community,” Downtown Naperville Alliance posted on social media in a message following the store’s closure announcement.

“The Beidelman legacy lives on in the homes, moments and traditions they helped shape in Naperville and the western suburbs will always be part of who were are,” the post said.

This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
