A driver was killed in a shooting incident involving a Warrenville police officer on Monday afternoon on Interstate 88 in DeKalb County following a suburban police chase, according to the Illinois State Police.
The shooting occurred at around 3:12 p.m. Monday, on I-88 westbound near Keslinger Road near the border of Kane and DeKalb counties, the Illinois State Police said in a news release.
According to preliminary information, a Naperville police officer had located a vehicle near Route 59 and North Aurora Road that was wanted in connection with a missing person reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, the news release said. The driver had shown a firearm and then fled in the vehicle, according to the release.
Officers from the Warrenville Police Department ultimately located the vehicle and began a pursuit as the driver continued to brandish a firearm, the state police said in the release.
Illinois State Police became involved when the pursuit entered I-88 westbound, the news release said. As the vehicle entered DeKalb County, spike strips were used, and the vehicle came to a stop on the interstate near Keslinger Road, the release said.
Both the driver and a Warrenville police officer reportedly discharged their firearms during the incident, the state police said, and the driver sustained a gunshot wound. Officers administered life-saving measures on the scene before the driver was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the release.
No officers were injured in the incident, the state police said.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is investigating the Warrenville officer’s use of force, the news release stated. State Police Division of Internal Investigation special agents are investigating the state police’s involvement in the incident.
The state police said that the investigation is open and ongoing, and that evidence and facts will be submitted for review to the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office when the investigation is completed.
