Five people were rescued overnight after a call of an explosion at a 3-story apartment building in northwest suburban Des Plaines, officials said.

Shortly before 1 a.m., firefighters responded to a building located at 1279 Harding Ave. engulfed in flames. At least five residents were rescued from the building with ladders placed up to the balconies, said Des Plaines Fire Department Chief Matt Matzl.

Matzl added the building was completely destroyed and is uninhabitable. The ages and genders of the injured, as well as their conditions was not immediately available, Matzl said.

Several fire departments from neighboring towns responded to the explosion. As of Wednesday morning, officials were investigating the cause of the blaze.
