A dog was found dead and a home was deemed uninhabitable after a fire on Aurora’s West Side Saturday, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

At around 1:17 p.m. on May 2, the fire department responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Lakeview Drive, a news release from the Aurora Fire Department said. Upon arrival, crews found fire conditions inside a two-story single-family home.

The fire was initially dispatched as a box alarm after the owner returned home and found smoke inside the house, but was upgraded to a second alarm once crews arrived and confirmed there was an active fire inside the home, according to the fire department.

Firefighters advanced hose lines into the home, and truck company personnel conducted primary searches of the first and second floors, the news release from the department said. Crews worked to contain the fire and check for extension, and the fire was contained to the kitchen area, according to officials.

Initial reports indicated that there might have been occupants inside the home, the department said, but, before firefighters entered, it was confirmed that all residents were out of the house.

A cat was found alive and removed from the home and reunited with the homeowner, but a dog was found dead inside, the department said. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

Due to the fire damage, the home was deemed uninhabitable, displacing three adults, per the fire department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the department’s fire investigators.
