Two people sustained gunshot wounds Friday in an incident on the West Side of Aurora, according to the Aurora Police Department.

At around 9:33 a.m., officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 2000 block of West Downer Place on Aurora’s West Side, a news release from the police department said. Preliminary information indicated that the gunfire had occurred between individuals associated with at least two vehicles in a parking lot area, according to police.

Responding officers then found a man, 25, with a gunshot wound near the intersection of Downer Place and Edgelawn Drive, the department said. They rendered aid until Aurora Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene and took the man to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said. He later left the hospital on his own, according to the police department.

Shortly after, a second man with a gunshot wound arrived at another local hospital for treatment, the Aurora Police Department said, and was treated and released. Preliminary investigation indicates that it was related to the shooting incident on West Downer Place, police said.

As a result of the incident, several nearby schools and childcare facilities were temporarily placed on hold-in-place status, which was later ended, police said.

Detectives from the department’s Investigations Bureau responded to the scene on West Downer Place and are investigating the incident, the news release from the police department said.

Evidence technicians processed the scene and collected forensic evidence, including several vehicles struck by gunfire, and Aurora Police Department K9 teams, drone operators and outside assisting agencies conducted searches for involved subjects and evidence in the area, police said.

No one is currently in custody, the department said on Friday afternoon. Based on preliminary information, the incident is believed to have been targeted, with no indication of an ongoing threat to the community, police said.
