A severe thunderstorm watch for the Chicago area and portions of northwest Indiana remains in effect until 5 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

A warning for severe thunderstorms capable of bringing winds up to 70 mph and pea-sized hail to Chicago expired at 11:30 a.m., but weather officials warn the day’s 78-degree high temperature could fuel additional afternoon storms.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications warned storms late Monday morning could bring “considerable” damage to trees, mobile homes and outbuildings.

Tornado season is underway in Chicago. Here’s what to expect and when.

A ground stop at Chicago Midway International Airport is in effect until 11:45 a.m. and flights departing Chicago O’Hare International Airport are delayed an average of 30 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

A cold front moving into the region Tuesday runs the risk of additional showers and storms as temperatures drop into the 50s by midweek.

It is currently 76 degrees at O’Hare International Airport.
