Spencer Leak Jr., the vice president of prominent Chicago funeral home Leak & Sons, has died at 56, his family confirmed in a Sunday statement.
For more than 45 years, Leak Jr. helped lead the family business that has provided end-of-life services for police officers, homicide victims and historic figures like singer Sam Cooke and civil rights icon the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. The Chicago funeral home was first founded by his grandfather the Rev. Andrew R. Leak in 1933.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support we have received, which bring us great comfort during this tremendously difficult time. We will share service details in the coming days,” the statement said.
Rainbow PUSH released a statement Sunday night reflecting on the Leak family’s enduring faith. “Spencer and his family comforted people in their darkest hours, buried loved ones with dignity, and lifted entire communities with compassion and love,” the statement said.
“Barely three months ago, Spencer was helping lead my father’s homegoing services — from Chicago to Tennessee to South Carolina — as well as the days-long vigils as Reverend Jackson lay in honor at Rainbow PUSH headquarters,” Yusef D. Jackson, president and CEO of Rainbow PUSH said in the statement. “Spencer never had to be asked. He volunteered. He showed up. And he never left my father’s side.”
The Jackson family also released a statement Sunday night remembering Leak as a distinguished businessman, civic leader and steward of one of Chicago’s most respected families.
“When our family first planted roots in Chicago, it was the Leak family who embraced us and welcomed us into their home, helping our parents establish a foundation for their young and growing family,” the statement said.
Aside from his lifelong work with the family business, Leak Jr. also mentored young Black men and served as a tutor for young people in need, according to an Illinois House resolution commemorating his 55th birthday last year.
“He was a beloved figure whose contributions helped shape the social fabric of our city,” the Rainbow PUSH statement said.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, and children, Spencer Leak III and Emma Leak.
