Authorities said that a firework shattered a window at Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez’s home near the Lower West Side early Saturday morning, though the alderman’s office claimed in a social media post that it was a “bomb.”
The 25th Ward office said the explosion happened around 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of West 21st Street & South Damen Avenue.
Police said what they suspect was a firework was placed in the street and ignited, while Sigcho-Lopez’s office said it was placed “directly outside the alderman’s residence.” No injuries were reported. Police did not name the alderman directly.
Sigcho-Lopez ward office released an image of an SUV’s license plate number in a social media post, claiming the explosive was a bomb, set off by one of two men who arrived in an SUV.
Belmont Area (Area 3) detectives are investigating the incident.
