Police have launched a death investigation after responding to a fire on the city’s Near South Side and found a man shot in the head, authorities said.

Officers responded to a fire in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue just after 5 p.m. and discovered a 33-year-old man inside a building with a gunshot wound to his head, according to Chicago police.

The man was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound, a laceration to his neck and smoke inhalation, police said. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

A weapon was recovered on the scene, police said. There was no offender information as Belmont Area detectives investigated.
